Four women plus ten years times dozens of towns and cities divided by scores of shows comprised of many thousands of notes- this equation equals one of Canada’s most accomplished jazz ensembles. From the Montreal Jazz Festival to schools in northern BC, from Halifax to Ucluelet, Vancouver’s Mother of Pearl have taken their passion for jazz across the country, even making excursions south of the border. Along the way they have unearthed a treasure trove of tunes by Canadian women spanning almost a hundred years- tunes that form sheBOP!, their tribute to their foremothers. To their distinctive arrangements of jazz classics and obscure gems they have added original compositions, enriching the tradition. The results can be heard on three recordings, in concerts, at school shows and workshops or on a festival stage. Four women - performers, teachers, composers and mothers + great music = Mother of Pearl!
