You Gotta Love Life
In 2006, Mother of Pearl, now restructured as a quartet with Karen Graves singing lead vocals, celebrated its 10th anniversary. It also released its third recording, You Gotta Love Life. Every member of the band contributes compositions- seven of eleven tracks are band originals with another written by Canadian composer, Candace Carnie. The remaining three ‘standards’ on the album are clever, original arrangements that owe as much to the band’s creativity as to their original creators. With four distinct takes on life, it is no surprise that the original tunes range from samba to blues, bebop to ballads. These are songs that represent the life experience of the creators, and each piece reflects something very personal about the writer. Karen, freshly back from a vacation in Mexico, brings home with her a Latin instrumental, Samba de Cedro, inspired by a child she met. Brenda recently lost her father and sums up that experience in Owed to Billy. Lauri turned a drive in the desert into The Road to Utah, while Wendy drew upon her love of a wacky jive and wrote Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda. What especially makes this music great is that the personal experience of each composer is picked up, amplified and explored by the other ensemble members. That’s what playing together for a decade brings to the mix!

“This is one hot band.” John P. McLaughlin, The Province

“ As for their newest album, You Gotta Love Life, it is just that: a brilliantly written celebration of life- its joys and sorrows. It’s a must-have CD for jazz lovers…” Lori Pappajohn, The Burnaby NOW

sheBOP a Century of Jazz compositions by Canadian Women

In 2001 Mother of Pearl began work on sheBOP! A Century of Jazz compositions by Canadian Women. The project’s aim was deceptively simple--find Canadian jazz written by women. The result was the better part of a year of intensive research by the group, their friends and total strangers across the country that got the bug. Archives, libraries, used record stores, dusty piles of decades-old sheet music, the minds of Canada’s most erudite jazz players, writers and collectors were all ransacked to find tunes. The results were often surprising.

Who wrote Frank Sinatra’s first big hit?
Who wrote the Hockey Night in Canada theme?
Who wrote the first Canadian song to sell a million copies?
Canadian women, that’s who!

Some of the composers who made the sheBOP! cut were household names (Joni Mitchell). Others were obscure when they lived and long forgotten (Hootin’ Lil Marcus). Others had regional followings (Vera Guilaroff-“Canada’s Melody Maid”). Some were never regarded as jazz composers (La Bolduc) until Mother of Pearl got hold of their work. Bringing it all together became a labour of love. sheBOP! is more than a CD—it is a celebration of the often unknown contribution women have made to jazz in Canada.

Mother of Pearl
Their first CD helmed by noted Vancouver producer Bill Buckingham reflects Mother of Pearl’s eclectic tastes and talents. Among the selections are the historic hit Jump Children originally recorded by one of the most acclaimed all-women’s big bands of the 40’s, the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. Tracks include several original compositions such as Pizz off, Funk up, a high-spirited multi-metre frolic and Caruise, a slinky seduction by saxophone. Rounding out the CD are well-known standards such as Love Me or Leave Me and Fever to which Mother of Pearl adds its creative touch.
